Building strong and lasting connections between Canadians and newcomers isn’t just a nice idea - it’s something we need. It helps people feel welcome, makes them want to stay, get involved, and grow our community together.
Newcomers bring talent, ideas, and vibrant cultures. What they need is to feel like they belong, like they’re truly home.
And often, it all starts with small, simple things.
If you’re a newcomer:
• Look people in the eye, smile, say hello. It’s a powerful way to connect.
• Don’t be afraid to ask questions - about services, how things work, local customs.
• At work, if you don’t understand something, speak up. Ask for a demonstration. Here, that shows you care and want to do things right.
• Talk to your supervisor about your needs or concerns - most solutions come through open communication.
• Share your ideas, your background, your perspective - respectfully and confidently.
If you’re Canadian:
• Start the conversation. A friendly word goes a long way.
• Help them with housing: share tips, contacts, explain your expectations clearly and kindly.
• Show them how things work in your home - like using a fan or opening a window when cooking.
• Invite them to your family life: a dinner, a bonfire, a birthday. These small gestures build real connection.
Getting to know a new culture without leaving home? That’s a beautiful opportunity.
In the end…
Communication is what builds every relationship.
Simple words, honest gestures, and open hearts - that’s how we build bridges.
What simple gesture made you feel welcome in Canada?
