Hygiene in Canada: a very important part of daily life

Updated: Aug 21, 2025

In Canada, personal hygiene is essential - not just for health, but also for social life, work, and community living.

This includes:

• Showering every day

• Wearing clean clothes

• Using deodorant (not just perfume)

If you work in a factory or do physical labour, it is very important to wash your work clothes every day. Sweat and odours build up quickly and can make others uncomfortable.

Many newcomers may not be fully aware of how important this is in Canada. But employers, colleagues, and neighbors are often very sensitive to body odor - even if they don’t say it directly. Poor hygiene can affect relationships and job opportunities.

Important: Strong perfume or cologne should be avoided, especially in hospitals, clinics, and workplaces. In many places, scented products are not allowed.

This is not about judgment - it’s about mutual respect, comfort, and successful integration. Good hygiene helps you feel confident and be accepted.
