Pharmacy Services in Canada

Updated: Aug 21, 2025

In Canada, pharmacies are more than just places to buy medicine. Pharmacists play an important role in the healthcare system, and many services are available without an appointment.

Here’s what you should know:

Advice for minor health issues

If you have a small health concern - like a cold, allergies, or a headache - you don’t always need to see a doctor. A pharmacist can give advice and suggest over-the-counter treatments.

Vaccinations at the pharmacy

Many pharmacies offer vaccines: for the flu, COVID-19, shingles, or even for travel. You can often book online or simply walk in.

Prescription medications

When your doctor prescribes medicine, you can take the prescription to the pharmacy. Often, clinics will even send the prescription directly to your preferred pharmacy.

Understanding your medication

Pharmacists can explain how to take your medicine, possible side effects, and what to do if you miss a dose. Don’t hesitate to ask - they’re there to help!

What’s free and what’s not

Some services are free with your provincial health card (like in New Brunswick), others may have a cost. Always ask before receiving a service.

Easy access for everyone

You usually don’t need an appointment to talk to a pharmacist. They can help in person - and sometimes in your language. If you don’t know where to turn with a health question, the pharmacy is a great place to start.
